As a visionary individual myself, I've always aspired to position myself in a prestigious institution. For those of us who are now fully embracing the "adulting" phase, this ambition is something we ardently desire. We're stretching our confidence to shine during interviews. However, as I've navigated this journey, I've come to realize that this aspiration is no walk in the park. Having been through various companies and had the opportunity to experience all the "must-dos before a job interview," it's clear that it requires significant effort.

1. Match your skills

Before even attempting to present your qualifications to your prospective employer, it's crucial to ensure that your skills align with the job you intend to apply for. Some individuals have cultivated the mindset that an eagerness to learn is enough to make everything fall into place. As we often hear, "attitude over skills." While this might hold true, what lies ahead for you at the end of the tunnel? It can leave us feeling stagnant. Cultivating expertise in your role opens up more opportunities for growth and expansion, which is invaluable. Match your skills to achieve success!

2. Fact-finding game

This is a crucial phase during the interview process. When searching for a job online or perusing job flyers, it's common to be drawn to the advertised position rather than delving into the company's information. Even if you've aligned your skills perfectly with the role, the question remains: how effective will you be, and what impact can you make on the company? It takes some effort to conduct online research. You can explore their website, or, with the advancement of technology, they may have established their own social media presence. You can freely access their public financial information and industry standing. All it takes is resourcefulness.

3. Believe in yourself

It's often this one aspect that many of us find challenging to contemplate. You may lack a clear strategy on how to reassure yourself that this is indeed a significant step toward achieving some of your dreams. When uncertainty begins to creep in, it's always beneficial to take a moment, breathe, and reflect. Embrace your weaknesses and discover ways to improve them. Highlight your strengths and consistently use them as a launching point to establish the trust and belief in yourself. Trust me, I've doubted myself a million times, but I always trust in myself that I can do it. And you can do it too.

4. Know the basics

Garb to Grab the Chance

I often share my wisdom with those who trust my advice, and one key aspect I stress is the importance of attire when preparing for a significant event. I emphasize that it's ultimately up to them, but clothing plays a vital role. The first rule is to understand the nature of the work you're pursuing. Since you aim to join a reputable company, your appearance should be spotless. Choose an outfit that aligns with the role you're aspiring to. If you want to be great, look great!

Bring Everything You Need

Most recruiting staff will provide a list of essential items you should bring when they schedule your interview. Many corporations I've encountered are ready to supply what's missing on the interview day, but it's wise to double-check the requirements the day before the big event. This serves as a crucial reminder. Taking that first step into the scene can already be nerve-wracking. When you're about to engage in a face-to-face conversation, realizing you forgot essential items like a pen or other necessities can add unnecessary tension. Be prepared, always.

Avoid Unnecessary Responses

Even if you're well-prepared and ready to make a strong impression, one crucial aspect you might overlook is organizing your responses. It's essential to answer only what's asked of you. Focus on the questions and provide relevant answers. During one-on-one discussions, people often inquire about your resume and credentials, making it a relatively straightforward interaction. You just need to deliver acceptable responses. You can find tutorials online or seek advice from those who have gone through job interviews. Another tip is to understand the "2. Fact-finding game" principle - be ready to explain why you chose the company and what you bring to the table. This is a pivotal factor in their decision to hire you or not, and it requires knowledge of the company's background.

5. Sell your true self

We all yearn for fulfillment, and having our dream job is often at the top of our list. In pursuit of this goal, we should never feel the need to hide our true selves. While skills and attitude are important, the most essential representation of yourself is simply YOU. You can always improve how you present yourself or communicate, but you should never let your true essence be concealed. You deserve to shine in the spotlight.
